The Shambhala Teachings Series Autumn 2023

This series will take place in-person in Clapham as well as online on Zoom.

The founding principles of all Buddhist teaching are compassion and wisdom. The Buddha shared his teachings with the intention that his students and future generations could engage with them, and realise what it means to be human.

In the same way the founder of Shambhala, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, presented the Shambhala teachings as a way for his students and future generations to connect with the essence of the Buddhist teachings whilst engaging in societal activities such as family life and work.

The Shambhala approach emphasises the innate dignity and sanity we possess and explores how the beauty and magic of the world can awaken those qualities within us, rather than provoking attachment, aggression and ignorance.

The Shambhala teachings and practices provide us with a structured path to follow, where we can learn to connect with our gentleness and strength. By bringing a compassionate touch to the messiness of being alive, we can move toward feeling good enough just as we are. If this resonates with you, we invite you to join us this Autumn.

Here is a video on the Shambhala Teachings and their relation to Buddhism.

The series of Shambhala teachings is presented as 5 individual weekends (although sometimes offered in different formats). We will be running the first 3 of these weekends this Autumn. It is recommended that you participate in these three programmes in order, if possible.

What each weekend involves:

  • Meditation Instruction
  • Time to Meditate
  • Talks
  • Discussion groups/pairs
  • One-on-one meetings
  • Regular breaks
  • Lunch and tea

A key aspect to the Shambhala teachings is the way the meditation technique changes through the different weekends. The meditative experience is in tune with the experiences highlighted in the teachings. The weekends will include substantial time to practise these techniques.

We aim to provide a space which allows you to explore the meditation technique and teachings in a positive environment, with a welcoming and inclusive community, and opportunities for both group and one-on-one discussion spaces to reflect and ask questions.

Please let us know if there is anything you need to support you with participating. Each programme can be attended in person or online. If you are participating in person, we offer cushions or chairs for meditating, there are regular breaks and opportunities to move, all dietary restrictions can be accommodated, and we will do our best to meet any access needs.

Feedback from our Community Members:

“The progression of the ideas and the meditation techniques feel both profound and organic, they created a foundation around which I’ve been able to build the rest of my path.”

“It presents some of the most profound  insights of Buddhism and the path of meditation in a deceptively simple, direct  and experiential way – and in a remarkably short space of time.”

“Not just mindfulness but a deep and profound context to the instruction including building connection to a community of practitioners with shared vision.”

“The centre is really nice. There is delicious food as well as tea. A welcoming inclusive accessible community. Not dogmatic but open to critical thinking.”

Each course can be attended in-person in Clapham or online on Zoom.
