Gardner Murphy
After a trip to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, looking for a compatible practice community, Gardner met VCTR in 1972 at Tail of the Tiger retreat center and began studying and practice in accordance with his teachings. Later, he met SMR and have continued as a student in the Shambhala mandala. He has been a meditation instructor for many years, participating in the life of the Portland Shambhala Center since 1976. He enjoys raising and eating fruit and vegetables grown on a city lot, bicycling, outdoor activities and TaiChi practice.
Gardner will be assisted by John Smith:
John Smith has been a student of Shambhala since 1975, and has played many different roles in Boulder and in Portland (since 1999). He likes teaching and talking with others about meditation. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and has a consulting business focusing on the development and support of learning communities and their uses of technology. He likes jazz, photography, red wine, and tries to bicycle to the gym frequently.
How it Works
This introductory program is ideal for beginners as well as those who would like to stabilize and deepen their meditation experience. We offer this program once a month, on a Saturday morning or a weekday evening.
The class starts with introductions and meditation instruction, followed by alternating periods of guided meditation and discussion. Instruction focuses on both technique on the cushion and how to integrate meditation in your daily life. There will be ample time to discuss your experience and receive individualized feedback.
Location
This workshop will take place at our rental space, the Portland Dhamma Center, located at 1404 SE 25th Ave, Portland, OR. Please enter through the lower side door (photo and parking map below). The doors will lock to new arrivals 10 minutes after the start of the program.
Meditation is a refuge from wild mind and a crazy world. This practice takes bravery.
