Wu Wei is the Taoist concept of effortless action.
Taoism arose in China thousands of years ago as a living philosophy researching enlightenment and immortality through observing nature and practicing meditation, internal energy cultivation, right food, right exercise and more. A Taoist is a ‘follower of The Way’. The results of their experimentation produced such treasures as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Feng Shui (geomancy), Qigong (Chi Kung) and Tai Chi.
Tai Chi, which translates as ‘the grand ultimate’ is a uniquely powerful Chinese Martial Art that has been adopted the world over as a health exercise system harmonising mind, body and spirit through cultivating internal energy (chi).
In this special weekend workshop we will use Tai Chi movement (Tai Chi Form), Chi Kung (Qigong) and lots of energetic partner practice to drop into experiences of Wu Wei, where the chi flows abundantly and everything occurs of its own accord. You do not need any special levels of fitness, but do need to be able to stand and be willing to work in pairs and groups on energetic practices. The level of exertion is perhaps like gardening spring cleaning or hiking, but the sensation of doing authentic Tai Chi is superlative.
This workshop is suitable for people who have never done Tai Chi before, those who have done some or those who have a lot of experience. It may also be of interest to anyone seeking to experience internal energy and its possibilities. As Master Ding has said, “directly experiencing internal energy at the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced practitioner will bring a clarity that surpasses words”.
Sifu Nick Cheang has 25 years experience of Traditional Tai Chi Chuan and is a senior practitioner under Master John Ding, 1st disciple of Grandmaster Ip Tai Tak, who was 1st disciple of Yang Sau Chung, 4th generation head of the Yang family style of Tai Chi Chuan. Nick began martial arts in 1978 studying a variety of external styles such as Judo, Kickboxing, Shaolin and Wing Chun for over 20 years before committing to Master Ding’s Tai Chi in 1999. Nick trains all aspects of the Art: health, healing, martial arts and spirituality and aside from teaching and practicing Tai Chi, is a healer/body therapist. Prior to committing to a full-time Tai Chi lifestyle in 2003, Nick was a Director of an IT software house providing life insurance administration software to an international client base from the London Docklands.
