Meditation has long been associated with peacefulness. In fact, one very common and ancient form of meditation–shamatha–is often rendered into English as “peaceful abiding.” But what exactly do we mean by peace in the context of meditation? Is it simply a feeling of calmness, or is it deeper than that? And how do we practice “peaceful abiding,” especially when we don’t feel at all peaceful? Can practicing peace on the cushion help us deal with tension and conflict in our day-to-day lives?
This three-hour mini-retreat will include a brief reflection on the title theme, guided instruction followed by periods of sitting and walking meditation, other contemplative practices, and a period of group discussion. All are welcome, including those who have no previous experience with meditation. This is an in-person event.
