Join us for an evening of Buddhist women reading the poetry of Buddhist women from the ancient Therigatha to the contemporary. We recently learned about the first nuns when Dr. Jan Willis was here teaching about Women in Buddhism this summer. It is a very intriguing story of one woman’s commitment (the Buddha’s aunt) to turn the Buddha’s mind! Out of this story we learned about a whole body of poetry written by some of the earliest nuns and we were inspired to devise a way to share them. The Therigatha is a collection of short poems from as early as the 6th century BCE. We promise not to read them all! And they will be interspersed with very contemporary Buddhist women poets.
