When we medidate, we sit wrapped in our skin, showered or covered by our thoughts about our skins and the mutiple stories we believe or not about ourselves based on the intersections of our skin with other aspects or dimensions of our humanity, the beliefs secretly kept within or spoken out loud that our families of origin held about us, and the weight of the stories of power or lack thereoff held by the members of the many cultures in which we navigate. But we are not the skin, nor the stories, nor just simply travelers on crossroads between cultures.
Basic goodness. When awake, we can begin to feel who we really are, the softness, intelligence and clarity that we really are. And as we begin to feel who we really are, we can rejoin our open heart of bodhicitta and we may perhaps find ourselves in a place where we can better extend our compassion onto others.
As we begin to feel who we really are seeing through the stories about the color of our skin and our places in the world, we might be touched by a sense of warmth – maitri for ourselves and others. But we might also uncover, or touch upon a veil of anger laced with sadness that we may have learned to hide for fear of being seen as weak. Looking and feeling deeply we might feel touched by aspects of ourselves that we may not want to see. And we breathe.
This is a self and group exploration of how we are or have been affected by race and ethnicity and any other aspects of our being that serve to construct or build our identity. This is an exploration within our Shambhala home, for people who self identify as people of color.
There is much work to be done to begin to articulate how identifying as POC inform our practice(s) and how our practice(s) inform or not our identity as POC. Who am I when, or if, I dropped the layers of identifiers? What remains?
Please join Christopher Longoria and Rita Ricardo to start what is perhaps a very much needed dialogue.
