Learn to Meditate

with Tessa Watt & Vinita Joseph
November 7 / 7:15 PM - November 28 / 9:15 PM

Our four week Learn to Meditate foundation course provides a complete introduction to mindfulness meditation. It is taught by trained and experienced instructors in our large and well equipped meditation room.

Mindfulness meditation provides many benefits – it develops the qualities of stability, clarity, and strength of mind. It allows us to live more mindfully and so improves confidence and concentration, and enables us to handle stress better. The Learn to Meditate course will provide tools and practical advice for developing your own mindfulness meditation practice.

Each of the four classes will involve guided meditation instruction, meditation practice, mindful activities, and discussion. The course is interactive and communal – we aim to create a learning environment where the instructions become experiential and directly relevant.

Class One:

Basic meditation: posture, mindfulness of breathing, working with thoughts.

Starting a meditation practice at home.

Class Two:

Meditation as a way of making friends with ourself.

Walking meditation.

Working with obstacles to meditation practice.

Class Three:

Understanding how meditation ‘works’: mindfulness (trenpa) and awareness (sheshin).

Obstacles and antidotes (continued).

Class Four:

How meditation nurtures insight.

How to go forward.

Obstacles and antidotes (completed).

Learn to meditate is for anyone who is new to mindfulness meditation, or would like to reconnect with and further develop their meditation practice.

About the teachers

Tessa Watt has been practising meditation with the London Shambhala Centre for over 25 years, and was appointed as a Shastri or senior teacher in 2017.  Tessa has had a varied career:  she was a Research Fellow in History at Cambridge University, and then for 16 years she was a Producer with BBC Radio, making documentary features. For the past decade she’s been teaching mindfulness, offering courses for the general public and in workplaces, including many leading companies around the UK. She teaches MPs, Peers and their staff in the Houses of Parliament, and she led an inquiry into ‘Mindfulness in the Workplace’ for the All-party Parliamentary Group for Mindfulness.

Tessa is an Associate of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and has taught at SOAS, University of London on their MA in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation. She is the author of  A Practical Guide to Mindfulness and Mindful London. She lives in Balham and has two daughters.

Dr Vinita Joseph has been involved with meditation since the late seventies. Over the years, she has done retreats with well-known teachers in the field such as Osho, Ram Dass and Thich Nhat Hahn. She has been involved with the London Shambhala Centre since 1989. For the last 20 years, she has led a small meditation group in Whitstable and is delighted that many of the participants have gone on to develop a regular meditation and retreat practice.

In terms of her working life, Vinita had a long career as a family lawyer until pressures on legal aid provoked her into taking a leap and leaving the law to study creative writing. She has since obtained a doctorate in Text and Practice from the University of Kent where she also worked as an Associate Lecturer in Creative Writing for a number of years. In parallel with this she qualified as a Relational Dynamic Coach. She is currently working on her first non-fiction book, alongside coaching individuals (principally academics and creatives) and developing workshops addressing some of the key issues faced by her clients.
