ONLINE: Karma and the 12 Nidanas

with Dan Hessey & Kate Vlasic
April 12 / 12:00 AM - May 10 / 12:00 AM

5 Monday evenings, 7pm - 8:30pm Eastern Time, via zoom, all sessions will be recorded and available to registered participants.

How do we keep getting into these situations? Why do things always/never happen to me? What does it matter what I do—I’m going to die anyway…Why do some beings end up in some bodies and some in others? How can I understand a multi-lifetime perspective if, according to the Buddha, there is no “I”? How does causality and karma work, anyway?  It seems like some people get away with all sorts of things and others are punished for no good reason!

When the Buddha left his palace, he saw an old person, a sick person, a corpse, and an ascetic, and decided to leave the palace to investigate the causes of suffering and questions like those above. His teaching on Pratityasamutpada (dependent origination) and karma were summed up in the Twelve Nidanas. This schema traces the process of a past lives, present existence and action, and future outcomes in twelve steps.  It is subtle and profound, and tremendously compelling when we have time to look at it closely.

In this course, Kate Vlasic and Acharya Daniel Hessey will present the Twelve Nidanas and discuss the concepts that underly it. Our hope is that by taking the time to look at the deep roots of what drives samsara—the never ending cycle of suffering that extends through lifetimes—we can awaken faith and confidence to renounce its causes and practice the dharma. Join us!
