Have you ever wondered how Buddhism made its way to Tibet? This series of classes in five parts explores the lives of five major founding teachers of Tibetan Buddhism and will focus on their spiritual journeys leading toward becoming fully awake and liberated practitioners. These five teachers are: Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa. Attend this series of classes to find out more about these masters of spiritual accomplishment who embodied the wisdom that has been brought forward to the world over the past thousand years. The dates of the classes will be: 1/23, 2/20, 3/19, 4/16, and 5/21 and take place from 8:00-8:30 pm after regular open meditation.
This class explores the life of the third founding teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu lineage: Marpa. Like Naropa before him, Marpa became a very learned adept in the Buddhist world, traveling to Nepal and India several times to study and become a realized disciple under the tutelage of Naropa. He is also distinguished as being mostly a layman and businessman, as well as raising a family. His lasting legacy is that he endured many hardships and long travels in his quest to spread the Buddhist teachings by providing translations of important Buddhist texts. Therefore, he is known endearingly as ‘The Translator.’ Marpa succeeded in mastering the tantric teachings, translating and bringing texts to Tibet, and officially establishing the practice lineage of the Kagyus in Tibet, which lives on to this day.
