Lojong: Practical Advice for Training the Mind and Cultivating Compassion

Explore this recorded Shambhala Online course at your own pace.

Regard all dharmas as dreams.

Whatever you meet unexpectedly, join with meditation.

Sending and taking should be practiced alternately. These two should ride the breath.

Always meditate on whatever provokes resentment.

Don’t expect applause.

The lojong (mind training) slogans attributed to the 11th-century Buddhist master Atisha are a central teaching for cultivating bodhichitta (awakened heart). These 59 slogans point to the profundity of meditation while offering practical advice for using the challenges of everyday life as occasions for evoking wisdom and opening our heart. They encapsulate the essence of what it means to walk the mahayana Buddhist path. This class will explore the contemplation and practice of the slogans (including the practice of tonglen) as a skillful way of arousing our natural wakefulness and compassion. Pithy, provocative, earthy, always instructive, the slogans, once encountered, have a way of popping up when we most need them.

Open to all. If you wish, you’re welcome to drop in for one or more individual class sessions. The suggested offering is $25 for each Wednesday session and $50 for the final Saturday session.

Limited scholarships are available for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Email [email protected] for details.

The weeknight sessions will be hybrid, both in person and available on Zoom. The Saturday session will be in person only. Please let us know how you will be attending when you register.
